How To Sign Your Minnesota Title

The person (or persons)* listed on the front of the title must follow these steps, unless otherwise noted:

  1. Print your name (or names)* on the front of the title where it says “Seller’s Printed Name”.
  2. Sign your name (or names)* on the front of the title where it says “Seller’s Signature”.

Minnesota Titling Information:

  1. Every vehicle must be titled with the following exceptions:
    1. trailer having a gross weight of 4,000 lbs. or less (unless secured by a lien or previously titled);
    2. trailer designed primarily for agricultural purposes except recreational equipment;
    3. and ATVs, snowmobiles, and off-road vehicles.
  2. Motorcycles and mopeds are required to have a title.
  3. Boat titling became effective January 1, 1991 through the Department of Natural Resources. Every boat must be titled with the following exceptions:
    1. if registered in another state and never used in Minnesota for over 90 days at a time;
    2. was manufactured before August 1, 1979;
    3. is 16 feet or less in length;
    4. if a rowboat with oar locks and an outboard motor rating of less than 40 hp;
    5. if a documented vessel;
    6. if a duck boat used only in season for duck hunting;
    7. if a rice boat used only in season for wild rice harvesting;
    8. and if it was not previously issued a title from another jurisdiction.
  4. Recreational vehicles (RVs) are required to have a title. RVs can include house trailers including those which telescope or fold down, chassis mounted campers, house cars, motorhomes, tent trailers, slip-in campers if permanently mounted on a vehicle’s frame, converted buses, and converted vans.

*For Multiple Owners:

If there is more than one owner listed on the title, one or both must sign it depending on how the names appear. See the below chart for details.

Remember, the name used to sign the title must match the name shown on the title exactly. Therefore, always remember to print/sign your name exactly as it is shown on the title.

John Doe OR Jane Doe

If “OR” is present between the names, only one of the owners must sign the title.

John Doe AND/OR Jane Doe

If “AND/OR” is present between the names, both owners must sign the title.

John Doe AND Jane Doe

If “AND” is present between the names, both owners must sign the title.

John Doe Jane Doe

If there is nothing present between the names, both owners must sign the title.

 

Please take note to adhere to the below instructions so as not to void your title.

  • Do not use markers or pencils. Only blue or black pen is allowed.
  • Do not cross out or strikethrough any text or writing.
  • Do not use white-out or similar substance.
  • Do not rip, tear, or tape the title.
  • Do not doodle on the title.
