Goodwill Car Donations FAQs

If your question is not answered here, please e-mail us at Support@GoodwillCarDonation.org.

Q. What types of vehicles can I donate?

A. We accept most cars, trucks, SUVs, vans, boats, RVs, campers, motorcycles, and more! Curious if we can accept your vehicle? Contact us today!

Q. Why should I donate a vehicle to Goodwill?

A. Safety, convenience, a tax deduction, and knowing that your donation is helping others get jobs. You don’t have strangers coming to your home. You don’t have to haggle with car salesmen over trade-in values. Towing of your vehicle is free for you and the IRS allows you to claim a car donation tax deduction. Donating to Goodwill is the easiest way there is to do something good in your community.

Q. How much of the proceeds from the sale of my vehicle will go to Goodwill programs?

A. All of the money from the resale of your donated vehicle goes to Goodwill for use in supporting its many mission-focused programs. However, Goodwill pays a management fee to National Charity Services to handle the operations of the vehicle donation program. This fee covers the cost of vehicle towing, auction and sale of the vehicles and parts as well as the administrative costs associated with management of the program.

Q. How will my donated vehicle be used?

A. All vehicles donated to Goodwill are resold with the proceeds used to fund mission-focused programs.

Q. Does my car have to be running to donate?

A. Not at all. Most times, we can accept a vehicle regardless of whether it is in running condition or not.

Q. Does Goodwill provide a free home pickup service?

A. Yes, Monday through Friday as well as sometimes on Saturday.

Q. What is the vehicle donation process?

A. Sure. The vehicle donation process is super quick and simple. You get in contact with us and we ask you a couple questions. These questions include information like your contact information, the make and model of the vehicle to be donated, and where the car is located. We do all the rest – from arranging a towing company to pick up our car to delivering you the paperwork used for tax benefit purposes.

Q. What steps do I need to take after I donate my vehicle?

A. You will receive a donation receipt once you sign the title over to Goodwill. Please take a “copy” of the donation receipt, your license tags and registration to DMV as soon as possible to de-register the car. Once it’s de-registered, then call your insurance company to cancel coverage (they might want a copy of the donation receipt, too). Further documentation you’ll want to keep is listed in the following answer. (Note: If applicable, Government regulations require owners to remove all military installation decals and other special access decals “before” a car is sold, traded or donated.)
