What Is an Associate’s Degree?

While you were trying to look for the best way to earn a degree, you might have asked yourself, “What is an associate’s degree?”

To answer your query, an associate’s degree is an undergraduate academic degree obtained by completing a skills training program at a college or university for a period of two years or less. Community colleges offer such programs to help students earn technical and academic skills that are transferrable and useful should they choose to look for employment right after course completion or move into their desired field later on.

Many people think that a bachelor’s degree will enable them to boost their career options and earning potential. However, not everyone is able to attend a four-year university—which is why an associate’s degree remains a practical option for those who are looking for a less expensive academic degree with a much shorter time frame for completion. Besides, once they obtain their associate’s degree, the great opportunities for enjoying higher pay in today’s job market make such a degree a valuable springboard for career success.

Types of Associate’s Degree

Community colleges have evolved and have expanded their reach to include a bevy of available programs. Goodwill Car Donations points out the four different types of an associate’s degree:

  1. Associate of Arts

The associate of arts degree is one of the most popular degrees available. To complete a program, you must take on a 60-hour coursework. The associate of arts degree cover the fields of sociology, psychology, economics, elementary education, music, English, and history.

  1. Associate of Science

The associate of science degree will require you to major in chemistry, biology or mathematics. Like the associate of arts degree, an associate of science degree also requires at least 60 hours of coursework. Both associate of arts and associate of science degrees can be used by students as stepping stones in earning a bachelor’s degree.

  1. Associate of Applied Sciences

Compared to the associate of science degree, the associate of applied sciences degree features a much shorter coursework duration and discussion of theory as it puts more emphasis on practical and hands-on training. Those who complete this course can expand their skills and be qualified to attain a higher position at work. Moreover, this is a perfect option for those who are interested in joining the workforce immediately after they graduate.

  1. Associate of Applied Arts Degree

An Associate of Applied Arts (AAA) degree is focused on a performing or visual art, aimed at providing students with extensive artistic training. Areas in which some AAA degree programs are available include fine arts, advertising art, music, and commercial music. It’s a specialized degree designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to enter the workforce immediately upon graduation.

Cost of Earning an Associate’s Degree

Like the costs of other degree types, the cost of obtaining an associate’s degree depend on several factors. What makes an associate degree attractive though is that community colleges can offer such degree for less than $10,000 a year.

Help the Disadvantaged Land a Proper Job

While many people are lucky to land a high-paying job, some individuals just don’t have that luck. The usual reason behind this is the lack of skills needed for certain jobs.

However, with your help, Goodwill Car Donations can provide the disabled and other disadvantaged residents in your community with free access to programs that offer skills training, career development, and employment opportunities. All you have to do is donate to us any vehicle you no longer need. Once we received your donation, we’ll have it auctioned off. We’ll then use the money generated from the sale to support the many community improvement programs offered by the Goodwill nonprofit organizations in your area.

To show our appreciation for your support of our cause, we’ll take care of all your paperwork, tow away your vehicle for free, and promptly deliver to you your 100% tax-deductible sales receipt following the sale of your donated vehicle. You can use this receipt to claim a top tax deduction in the next tax season.
