The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was created to investigate workers’ complaints of discrimination happening in their workplaces. However, despite the thousands of reports about racial discrimination that the government receives each year, employers are rarely held accountable or found guilty.
Racial discrimination is one of the most commonly filed complaints by workers, yet it’s also the one with the lowest rate of success. On a yearly average, only as little as 15% of the total complainants receive any form of relief or compensation.

If your company already has resources or programs in place to spread awareness on racial equality, then that’s great! If not, then you might want to consider coordinating or suggesting this to your Human Resources department to help educate everyone at the office about racial injustice and improper behavior toward colleagues who are of a different race or ethnicity.
- Let your voice be heard.
When you spot something that isn’t right, speak up! We all have a voice for a reason. We shouldn’t tolerate our workplace or offices turning into a toxic environment because of racial discrimination. Don’t let racial bias fester unhindered and don’t be cowed into silence just because the violator is in a more senior role or position than you. Denounce behavior that deserves to be called out! Through your actions, you can help build a healthier and better workplace for all races and cultures.

Racial harassment or discrimination is a serious charge, and Human Resources is obliged to investigate claims like this whenever they are made. They have to be impartial during any investigation. Any sort of bias against the employee making a discrimination claim could result in serious consequences or repercussions. The Civil Rights Act, Title 7 prohibits racial discrimination of any kind in the workplace, so never be afraid to speak your piece. The law is on your side!
