South Carolina car donation charities make it faster and easier than you may have thought possible
to do a good deed and get a tax deduction.
Do the following steps (& answer the questions) to get your donation done quickly:
1. Is the South Carolina charity legit - or a scam?
In every state, including South Carolina, there are bogus car donation 'charities' in operation.
They may seem professional on the surface, but a closer look may reveal a fraud. But luckily, it's easy to
"take a closer look" and find out if they are legit or not - right from this website.
All charities are required to register in South Carolina with the Secretary of State. There is a link
to a searchable online database below. But you may also want to check with online charity 'watchdog'
services (links below).
2. Is the South Carolina charity registered with the IRS? It should be
listed on IRS Publication 78 (link below) as an eligible charity. Legitimate or not, the charity
has to be registered with the IRS for you to get your car donation tax deduction.
3. Have the vehicle title in your possession. Replacement titles can
be gotten at the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (link below).
It is here you will sign the vehicle's title over to the charity.
(Some charities will offer to do the title transfer for you. But you may want
to do this yourself: This will ensure you aren't held responsible for any future
liabilities connected with the vehicle.)
4. Arrange for the charity to pick up the
vehicle. Don't pay for the vehicle to be towed - the South Carolina charity (or
solicitation service for the charity) should pay for it. (If they won't, find another charity.)
Remove the license plates from the vehicle before it is towed away.
5. Save your receipts for when you file your taxes. You must itemize
your taxes to get a car donation tax deduction.

for you to be eligible for a car donation tax deduction - even if the charity is legit.)
South Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles - Here's where you will sign
over the vehicle's title to your selected charity.
Make a South Carolina car donation here in the "Palmetto State." You not only get the
satisfaction of knowing you've done something good, but you may get a decent car donation tax deduction. And - depending on your vehicle and
circumstances - you may free up space on your street or driveway, improve the look of your property, and save
yourself the drudgery of fixing up and selling the vehicle.
