Your Connecticut car donation can be done faster and easier than you may think.  Follow these simple steps:

1.  Make sure the Connecticut car donation charity is legal.  Is it registered with the Connecticut State Attorney General's Office?  (link is below) It has to be, in order for it to be legit.  Note that there are many unscrupulous frauds out there posing as car donation charities.  These folks will take your vehicle and keep any money from its sale.  The paperwork they give you will not get you a tax deduction - not to mention that needy folks will not benefit. 

2. Make sure the Connecticut charity is registered with the IRS.  If it isn't, there will be no tax deduction for you. It should be listed on IRS Publication 78 (Link is below)

3. Have the vehicle title in your possession.  Replacement titles can be gotten at the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (link below).  There you will sign over the vehicle's title to the charity.  (Note that many charities will offer to do this for you, but it may be a good idea to do it yourself - to guarantee your release of liability from the vehicle.)

4. Arrange for the charity to come get the vehicle.  You shouldn't have to pay for the towing in Connecticut - the charity should cover the towing.  Remove the plates from the vehicle before it is picked up.  

5. Save your receipts for when you file your taxes.  You must itemize your taxes to get a tax deduction.
